INTERVIEW WITH ARTIST> Jessica Ward (USA)


 

 

1.) Who are you and where do you live?
I’m Jessica Ward an American gallery artist that only draws. I was a military brat so I’m not really from anywhere. I was born in Guam lived in Hawaii, California and Germany to name a few.
I currently live in Michigan but will be moving to Austria this July.

2.) What did you do before you decided to become an artist?
I was always been an artist, I’ve never done anything else. Went straight to art college and I have been a full time artist since I graduated.

3.) When and why did you decide you devote to the art?
When I moved to Los Angeles, California there were alot of opportunities out there. So I focused 100% on my art and getting it shown in galleries.

4.) What is your favoriteSubject (s) and design media?
My subjects are body image issues in women and eating disorders. I use hair alot in my drawings and really enjoy anatomy. I’m obsessed with graphite pencils and color pencils those are my favorite media.

5.) Where or how to find inspiration?
First I figure out a theme. Then spend alot of time sketching and gathering & researching photo references and source material. I usually dive right in after that.

6.) What do you like about your work?
I likethe immediacy of drawing, the instant gratification of dry media

7.) Which artist or art movement that has influenced you and what way?
Pop surrealism & low brow art movements are my biggest influences. I myself use non traditional and traditional techniques at once. I love the freedom and experimental attitudes involved in it.

8.) What are the best answers that you have received for your work?
The best response is when people enjoy my work enough to collect it.

9.) What are your favorite art and artists?
My favorite artists are HR Giger, Frida Kahlo, Gottfried Helnwein, Fuco Ueda, Travis Louie, Laurie Lipton and Audrey Kawasaki.

10.) What advice would you give to other artists?
Never ever give up and positive, keep creating and learning everyday.

How can I take my art to the next level?
